The chain of MJR Digital Cinemas is among the smaller owners and operators in the movie theaters industry. But its small size hasn’t stopped it from competing with it larger competitors, particularly when it comes to the quality of the movies, service and facilities.
Currently, there are less than a dozen MJR theaters with more than 150 screens; these show first-run movies. There’s also the Allen Park Digital Cinemas, a five-screen movie theater that shows second-run movies.

In the early 1980s, the founders of MJR Digital Cinemas bought the Main Art Theater in Royal Oak, Michigan. In subsequent years, the company acquired more locations in Michigan, such as in Monroe, Waterford, and Adrian.
The name of the chain is the acronym of its original slogan, Movies Just Right (MJR). But the current slogan has been changed to “It’s More Fun at MJR”, as included in the chain’s advertising material.
The chain has also gone on the dinner-and-a-show bandwagon in the movie theater industry. In December 2013, it announced its plans for construction of its first-ever Studio Bar and Lounge. Today, most of the locations have their own Studio Bar and Lounge so guests can enjoy great food and drinks before, during and/or after the movies.
In 2014, the chain also introduced its EPIC Experience program with its heart being Premium Large-Screen Format (PLF). The screens are among the largest in Michigan with their measurements of 43 feet by 80 feet, as well as combined with the 4k projection and Dolby Atmos technologies.
Films and Food Matters
Individuals who want to skip the long lines at the box office can book their tickets online via the MJR mobile app. This is a free-to-download, easy-to-use app that can also be used to store gift card, credit card, and loyalty card information, aside from booking and paying for your tickets.
Tickets, nonetheless, can still be bought at the self-serve kiosks in the theaters. Customers can also pick up the tickets they purchased online from these kiosks. Emphasis must be made that the latter service may only be available in selected locations.
Guests can also reserve their theater seats when booking their tickets online; again, the service is available in selected locations only. This way, you don’t have to show up hours before the movie just to get good seats, nor jostle for the seats you want. Be aware that there are terms and conditions in reserved seating, such as no orphan seats.
The chain also has a generous refund policy. Customers can refund their tickets prior to the show time of the concerned movie. The refund, furthermore, can only be made at the original theater that issued the ticket.
Customers are well-advised to follow the general policies of the chain to avoid inconvenience, which may include being evicted from the auditorium and criminal prosecution. These guidelines include no costumes allowed in the auditorium, no food and drinks bought from outside the theater, and no use of cellphones, camcorders and other recording devices.
The chain also adopts strict implementation of age restrictions, such as no children 6 years old and under will be admitted for features rated PG-13 and R. Minors 17 years old and under must also be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old, preferably a guardian or a parent. Valid identification may be required.
The theaters’ facilities and amenities are also among the best in the industry. The premium leather chairs with reclining features provide a nearly cocooning movie-watching experience for guests while the reclining feature allows for an at-home feeling, too. The aisles are also designed for larger leg room and better passage from the seats to the restroom, for example.
The PLF screens are, as previously mentioned, the largest in the industry. But its size isn’t just its single merit because the screens provide clear and crisp images, a must to complement the clear and crisp sound surround audio system. The result: You will love the movie-watching experience at every MJR theater and come back again and again for it.
The theaters are also handicap-friendly. Interested individuals can request for closed captioning devices, which are designed to transmit the dialogue on screen to a small yet easy-to-read screen attached to each seat. There are also assisted listening devices and Fidelio Descriptive Narration, a wireless audio system designed to deliver descriptive narration suitable for either the hearing-impaired (amplified sound) and visually –impaired. These features, however, are available at selected locations so be sure to ask the box office representative if you’re interested in these features.
For adults, the Studio Bar & Lounge is the best place to be before or after watching the movie. The full-service bar offers cocktails, beers and wines. But for children and teenagers, there’s the Pepsi Spire with its more than 500 flavor combinations; this service comes with unlimited refills, too.
For regular patrons, we suggest becoming a member of the MJR Premier Awards, its decade-old rewards program. This is a free-of-charge program that allows its members to earn and redeem points.
