Taking a look at a gripping tale and a deconstruction of this iconic villain’s backstory, Joker came up with a number of twists and interesting takes that brings you deeper into the story. After seeing this in Cinemark, it gave a gripping impression on the man’s origins as it recounts the scenario with superb performance and excellent camera work.
Before we continue, this film has a myriad of mature themes and is not recommended for younger audiences. With that out of the way, let us look at what Joker has to offer.
The Underlying Story
Joker follows the story of Arthur Fleck, an aspiring comedian that works as a party clown in Gotham City. Living with his mother, Penny, he has to struggle through the city’s evident divide among the classes. With crime and poverty being rampant within the city, it never goes well for Arthur.
The chain of events that ensue has him beaten up, looked down upon, and jeered on. Due to this, his colleague hands him a gun to defend himself with. He does manage to do so when faced by three drunken businessmen.
Aside from these turbulent moments, you also see Arthur’s struggle with himself as he suffers from an affliction that causes him to laugh without reason. This pathological laughter happens to be one of the characteristic points that defines Arthur’s character.
As the film progresses, you see Arthur may have his situation turn for the better. But it is also here that you see him crack down and eventually snap. This is one of the highlights of the film that covers the gravitas with a thought-provoking question.
More Than a Story
Joker shows more than an origin story, as shown in how it recounts the events. Through excellent writing and acting, you can see another aspect in society. One that makes you question why these ills take place.
It also dives into the issues of mental health as shown in Arthur’s characterization, which came to life through Joaquin Phoenix’s superb acting. This particular performance caught the attention of many that it garnered Phoenix a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. This is but one of the many accolades that this film received due to excellent writing and performance.
Outside from viewing it as a piece in the DC universe, it also comes off as a film with a resonant voice with its social commentary. It takes a look at the state of mental healthcare and how it has created a subset in human society. It does have some diverging opinions from others but it is still a worthy discussion to ponder about.
Something Best Seen on Screen
Overall, Joker stands out more than just an adaptation for a comic character. In fact, director Todd Phillips leaves the point ambiguous to Arthur’s fate. This would be best witnessed with both appreciation and a mind ready to ponder.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, take the chance to check it out as soon as possible.
